The May Fourth Movement was an important patriotic and democratic movement in modern Chinese history. Its influence was not limited to coastal cities, but also extended to remote inland areas, such as Chengdu in Sichuan, provoking great social upheaval and change. During this period, the Gao family, known for their scholarly background, became a microcosm of the cold reality of society. Beneath their seemingly glamorous exterior, descendants such as Ke'an and Ke'ding misused their family status to act wantonly, selling stolen goods, bullying maids, and hiding iniquity, violating the family's traditional morals. Elder Gao and Ke Ming represented the old ethics and family teachings; they vigorously upheld the old order and power, maintaining a conservative stance towards anything new, even at the cost of young lives to preserve the old order. In this oppressive and corrupt environment, Mei succumbed to depression and died, Ruiyu met a tragic fate, and Mingfeng chose the despair of suicide.
However, under the impact of new ideas, the force of rebellion was also surreptitiously in motion. Juehui became a representative of this change; she resolutely opposed the old “non-resistance” doctrine and bravely engaged in fierce struggles with Juexin. Ultimately, she chose to leave her family to pursue a new life of freedom and ideals. This historical narrative vividly showcases the challenging spirit and pursuit of ideals of the youth during the May Fourth Movement, as well as their determination and courage to sacrifice everything for freedom, equality, and justice.
