In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, a tragedy spurred by family grievances and warlord violence alters the fate of Lian Cheng (played by Huang Jue), a servant of the wealthy Lian family. After the family's massacre, Lian Cheng becomes the guardian of the family's orphan and seeks revenge. Subsequently, in his journey to escape, he manages to join the Kuomintang and follows his benefactor Su Zhidan (played by Sun Hongtao) to participate in the revolution, during which Su plants the seeds of communism in Lian Cheng's heart.
