Wu Tong is an ordinary teacher at a finance school, a genuine working-class individual, living a mundane life. By chance, Wu Tong encounters his high school classmate Tao Chu at a market; she is divorced and unemployed, struggling to make ends meet. Feeling inadequate and ashamed, Wu Tong believes he has no ability to help this "beautiful princess" he once secretly admired. At that moment, Wang Mei, the vice president of Taifeng Group, the largest enterprise in the city, invites Wu Tong to become the chief accountant. After taking on the role of chief accountant, Wu Tong's life undergoes drastic changes, with money, power, and beautiful women all presenting tempting offers, as a "happy life" seemingly arranged for him appears overnight. His wife, Shuang Ying, is worried about Wu Tong, insisting he "pays taxes" – meaning they must have intimate relations every day, leaving him too exhausted to think about other women. As Taifeng undergoes corporate restructuring, Wu Tong enthusiastically commits to the company’s reform and the pursuit of his own value and happiness, but he soon realizes that Wang Mei, along with Wang Qianjin, General He, General Gong, and his wife’s twin sister, Shuang Tao, are entangled in complex and intricate conflicts of interest. Everything Wu Tong faces seems disjointed and unsuitable; the thrill of suddenly climbing the ranks is gradually overshadowed by the challenges of daily life, leading him to doubt and struggle. Meanwhile, his domestic life is also chaotic: Shuang Ying returns to her family with their son and files for divorce. The two calmly go through the divorce procedures, and at the moment of parting, Wu Tong cannot control himself and tells Shuang Ying: "Believe it or not, up until today, you are the only person I have ever been close to!" From poverty to luxury, from obscurity to prominence, Wu Tong fails to realize that this unexpected change is actually a trap…
