In 1937, Tong Jiaru (played by Yang Zhigang) from Rehe left his hometown to teach Chinese at Nie Zhongcheng Middle School in Shanghai. His adopted daughter Nanna became disabled, and he was forced to stay after planning to escape south again. Witnessing the invaders harming his fellow countrymen, he endured humiliation in hopes of preserving his life.
