The new season's storyline takes place a year after the full awakening of Synth consciousness, in a divided Britain that exists in a fragile peace between humans and Synths. However, when a community of Synths is established, the stability both sides hope to achieve will be threatened. The Synths Mia, Niska, and Max (played by Gemma Chan, Emily Berrington, and Ivanno Jeremiah) continue to fight for survival, while humans Joe, Laura, their children Mattie, Toby, and Sophie (played by Tom Goodman-Hill, Katherine Parkinson, Lucy Carless, Theo Stevenson, and Pixie Davies) struggle to adapt to this new environment.
