The series is adapted from Umberto Eco's classic novel of semiotic detective fiction, telling the story of a murder mystery in a monastery: In 1327 Italy, Franciscan friar William (Turturro) and his apprentice Adso (Damon) arrive at a secluded monastery in the Alps, where they witness a series of murders. During their investigation, they are pursued by the church inquisitor Bernardo Gui (Everett), who ruthlessly prosecutes anyone who criticizes Catholic doctrine.
