This four-part drama tells the story of John Darwin, who faked his own death to defraud life insurance and avoid bankruptcy. He and his wife, Anne Darwin, conspired to convince the insurance company that John Darwin went missing while kayaking alone, resulting in over £250,000 in insurance payouts. The debt-ridden Darwin family had a mortgage and had maxed out 13 credit cards, accumulating a total debt of £64,000. At that time, Anne considered declaring bankruptcy but was ultimately persuaded by her husband to execute this seemingly absurd plan; however, this plan was successfully carried out for five years, even deceiving their two sons.
