14-year-old Aya Ikeuchi (played by Erika Sawajiri) lives in an ordinary family of six and is an excellent student who serves as a role model for her younger siblings. After entering high school, she seems to develop some health issues, beginning to lose her sense of balance and often falling to the ground. Her mother takes her to the hospital for an examination, only to discover that she has an incurable disease called spinocerebellar degeneration. Her life undergoes a dramatic change from this point on. She has to quit the school basketball team because her hands and feet start to lose coordination, she faces difficulties in writing, and eventually loses her ability to speak. She gives up many things, including her love and interests, but in return faces discrimination and misunderstanding from some people. She cannot understand why this illness had to choose her, but with the understanding and encouragement of her family, along with the support of her close friend Haruto Aso (played by Ryo Nishikido), she remains hopeful about life.
