The series is based on the 2016 fantasy/horror novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, set during the Jim Crow era of the 1950s. It tells the story of Black protagonist Atticus Black and his friends Letitia and uncle George embarking on a road trip across America to find Atticus's missing father. They must overcome the oppression brought by white supremacy while battling evil forces.
