This 4-part drama tells the story of John Darwin, who faked his own death to collect life insurance and avoid bankruptcy. He and his wife, Anne Darwin, conspired to convince the insurance company that John had gone missing while kayaking alone, securing over £250,000 in insurance money. The financially troubled Darwin household had a mortgage and had maxed out 13 credit cards, racking up a debt of £64,000. At the time, Anne considered filing for bankruptcy but was ultimately persuaded by her husband to carry out this seemingly absurd plan; however, it was successfully executed for five years, even deceiving their two sons. John and Anne, who received the insurance money, later moved to Panama, until John Darwin was exposed when he resurfaced in London in 2007.
