Starring Kazuki Sawamura, the latest series "Criminal Zero" in Asahi TV's Thursday mystery slot for 2019, written by Yasushi Togayama, a leading figure in the mystery genre known for "Aibou" and "Kasosaken no Onna", with music composed by Katsu Yokoyama, who recently collaborated with Sawamura on "Absolute Zero 3". This drama is a detective series with standalone episodes, and it was the champion of the winter 2019 ratings from January to March. The protagonist, elite detective Riku Fumiyasu of the Kyoto Prefectural Police's investigation division, portrayed by Kazuki Sawamura, suffered a falling accident 20 years ago. Although he wakes up and remembers everyday life, his personality becomes less confident, overly concerned about the opinions of others, and he loses all memories of his life as a detective, retaining only his innate exceptional senses and insight, along with a hatred for the roots of evil and a sense of justice. He acts like a rookie detective with zero experience but manages to solve cases in unexpectedly effective ways. His memory loss is attributed not only to injuries sustained while capturing criminals but also to psychological effects brought on by knowing a certain secret. Although he has been divorced once, he has also lost all memories related to his ex-wife. Sawamura expressed that joining the long-running Thursday mystery series brings a fresh feeling, much like a "newcomer," and he feels honored by this. While he has played many detective roles in the past, this version of Riku is unlike any he has portrayed before. Additionally, the setting in Kyoto allows the series to capture beautiful scenery not possible in Tokyo, as well as the local warmth and charm of Kyoto, with the hope of presenting a new type of mystery drama that different generations can enjoy. His partner is rookie female detective Tomoka Sakaai, played by Miori Takimoto. Tomoka has little romantic experience and has long admired the sharp and capable Riku, keeping records of all the cases he has investigated in her mind. After Riku loses his memory, she becomes his "user manual," helping him to solve cases by combining his sensory perceptions and observational skills with her knowledge of past experiences. In real life, the two have a 24-year age difference and a height difference of 22 centimeters, resulting in interesting and contrasting interactions in the drama. Takimoto expressed that she finds Sawamura extremely handsome when she sees him on television, and she personally likes humorous men. He is not only good-looking but also funny, with a wide range of acting abilities, making him an outstanding actor and her ideal type, and she looks forward to their collaboration.
