In a dilapidated apartment, the body of a woman who died months ago is discovered. After her death, the corpse was gnawed by several hungry cats in the apartment, making for a gruesome scene. The police initially determine that the woman, named Yoko Suzuki, is a typical case of solitary death, but the female officer in charge of the case, Ayano Okune (played by Manami Konishi), has a different opinion. Clues at the scene suggest there is more to Yoko's death than meets the eye. Flashbacks reveal Yoko's tumultuous and bleak life: neglected by her mother as a child, she moves to Tokyo alone to pursue a career, enduring humiliation to sell one more insurance policy. Eventually, she encounters the unscrupulous Take Shindai (played by Akira Yasuda), who deceives the homeless to gain living assistance, thereby opening the gates to hell for Yoko. With each step, Yoko is in despair, breaking away from her past self... The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Akira Yae.
