Starring Kazuki Sawamura, the latest series "Criminal Zero" in the Asahi TV Thursday mystery lineup for 2019 is written by Masashi Todayama, a leading figure in the mystery genre known for "Aibou" and "Kasei Genshiken," with music composed by Katsu Yokoyama, who recently collaborated with Sawamura on "Absolute Zero 3." This drama features a crime story that concludes in each episode and was the ratings champion of the winter season from January to March 2019. The protagonist is Reihiko Shiya (portrayed by Kazuki Sawamura), an elite detective in the Kyoto Prefectural Police, who suffered a falling accident 20 years ago. Although he wakes up and can remember daily life, his personality has become less confident, overly concerned about how others perceive him, and he has lost all memories related to becoming a detective, retaining only his innate excellent senses and insight, as well as a hatred for the roots of crime and a sense of justice. He is like a detective with zero experience, yet he resolves cases in unexpected ways. The loss of his memory is not only due to an injury sustained while chasing a criminal but also a psychological impact from knowing a certain secret. Although he has been divorced once, he also lost memories related to his wife. Sawamura expressed that he feels honored to join the long-running Thursday mystery series with a fresh feeling like a "newcomer." Despite having played many detective roles in the past, he has never taken on a character like Shiya before. Furthermore, the setting in Kyoto allows for beautiful scenery that cannot be captured in Tokyo, and he hopes to bring a new type of mystery drama that can be enjoyed by different generations. His partner is rookie female detective Tomoka Sazaki (portrayed by Misaki Takimoto), who has little romantic experience and has always admired the sharp and capable Shiya from the past. She keeps a mental record of all the cases he has investigated, and after Shiya loses his memory, she becomes his "manual," helping him solve cases using his senses and observational skills combined with her knowledge of his past. The two characters, with a 24-year age gap and a height difference of 22 centimeters, showcase an interesting dynamic in the drama. Takimoto expressed that when she saw Sawamura on TV, she thought he was super handsome. She likes men with a sense of humor, and he is not only good-looking but also interesting and versatile as an actor, fitting her ideal type, which makes her very much looking forward to acting together.
