He not only becomes a disciple of Chen Jinnan (played by Zheng Yichen) from the Heaven and Earth Society but is also forcibly taken back to the palace by the trusted eunuch Hai Dafu by order of Emperor Kangxi to fulfill his own plans. Entering the palace, Wei Xiaobao, guided by Hai Dafu, meets the willful and headstrong Princess Jianning (played by Lin Xinru) and the scheming and vile Empress Dowager (played by Chen Farong). He also accidentally becomes good friends with the young Kangxi (played by Tan Yaowen). On one hand, Wei Xiaobao helps the Heaven and Earth Society devise strategies for the restoration of the Ming Dynasty, and on the other hand, he assists the young emperor in clearing political obstacles in his path. After numerous narrow escapes and life-threatening situations, just when Xiaobao sees a bright future ahead, the choice between loyalty and righteousness puts him in a dilemma, and he chooses to abandon his promising future, leaving with his seven wives...
