Boris, a physicist graduated from the University of Chicago (played by Larry David), considers himself a genius and is extremely pessimistic about the world and human nature. After a bewildering breakup with his wife, he attempts suicide by jumping off a building, quits his job, and moves to Manhattan, New York, where he makes a living teaching chess to children. One evening, he discovers a naive girl named Melody (played by Evan Rachel Wood) who has run away from home in Mississippi at his doorstep. Melody asks Boris to take her in, and reluctantly, Boris agrees to let her stay for just one night. Despite the forty-year age difference, they decide to get married. Soon after, Melody's mother, Marietta (played by Patricia Clarkson), visits from Mississippi after being abandoned by her husband and falls in love at first sight with Boris's friend Kevin (played by Adam Brooks). Kevin helps Marietta become a photographer, but dissatisfied with Boris, Marietta goes to great lengths to break him and Melody apart...
