Young Valentin (James McAvoy) applies to be the secretary and assistant to the great author Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer), witnessing the profound and complicated feelings of love and hate between the aging author and his wife Sophia (Helen Mirren). Tolstoy is dissatisfied with Sophia's extravagant lifestyle, while Sophia disapproves of Tolstoy's collaboration with his "radical" disciple Vladimir Chekhov (Paul Giamatti). The two forces continuously clash around Tolstoy, and Valentin gets caught in the middle, writing diaries for both Sophia and Chekhov, documenting the author's later life, while also developing feelings for Tolstoy's admirer, Masha (Kerry Condon). Exhausted, Tolstoy ultimately chooses to leave home and breathes his last at the final station, while the struggle between Sophia and Chekhov continues until the last moment...
