The story takes place in England in 1934, where Kim Philby (Toby Stephens), Guy Burgess (Tom Hollander), and Donald Maclean (Rupert Penry-Jones) are three promising young men studying at Cambridge University. They are recruited by the Soviet overseas intelligence service to become spies, forming what later became known as the Cambridge Spy Ring. The three ambitious young men view the Soviet Union as fertile ground for realizing their political ideals. After the outbreak of World War II, members of the spy ring were employed by the British government. During the war, they provided countless valuable intelligence to the Soviet Union, significantly influencing the course of the war. In 1951, Burgess and Maclean fled to the Soviet Union after their identities were exposed, leaving Philby to endure intense pressure while undergoing a rigorous investigation by the British government.
