This film is a ink wash animation movie produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1988. It tells the story of an old qin player who falls ill on his way home at an isolated village ferry. A young fisherman invites the old man to rest in his thatched cottage, providing the elder with comfort. The next day, after recovering from his illness, the old man takes out his guqin and plays a tune, which draws the young boy to his side. Eager to learn, the boy is taught tirelessly by the elder, and they become master and apprentice. Seasons change, and with the boy’s skills greatly advanced, the elder is very pleased. However, in addition to feeling content, he also contemplates how to help his disciple reach new heights. One day, the elder accidentally sees a fledgling eagle leaving its mother to soar alone, and he is enlightened. He then takes the boy on a boat trip, sailing through great rivers and climbing high mountains, where the magnificent nature inspires the young boy. At parting, the old qin master gifts his beloved guqin to the boy, then walks alone towards the mountain peak among the white clouds. The young boy gazes at the fleeting figure of his teacher disappearing into the vast mountains and fields, and suddenly, inspiration strikes him. Sitting cross-legged on a cliff, he caresses the strings of the guqin, playing the melody from his heart, expressing his admiration for life, as the melodious sound of the qin echoes through the mountains. This film's character and scene design was done by renowned traditional Chinese painting masters Wu Shanming and Zuo Hejun, which laid a solid foundation for the film's artistry. Additionally, "Mountain Water Affection" is recognized as an unparalleled example of ink wash animation to this day, achieving a realm of harmony between humanity and nature with its poetic quality and subtly distant imagery.
