Rachel (played by Anna Chancellor) is a wealthy and kind woman who has adopted five children. One day, she is found murdered in her home, and the police discover the fingerprints of one of her adopted sons, Jack (played by Anthony Boyle), at the crime scene. Jack is considered the primary suspect and is arrested. However, just as the trial is about to begin, Jack dies in an accident while in prison, solidifying the conclusion that he was the murderer. An eye blink later, eighteen months have passed.
