The story takes place in June 1842 in the town of Cranford, where Miss Matty Jenkyns (Judi Dench) is nervously and carefully preparing for the arrival of her new tenant—the daughter of a late friend, Mary (Lisa Dillon). For this conventional little town, there is no news that can excite people more than the arrival of a stranger, and one of those excited is the town's "busybody," Miss Pole (Imelda Staunton). Colonel Brown's (Jim Carter) eldest daughter, Jessie (Julia Sawalha), refuses several marriage proposals because she does not want to leave her lonely father.
