Xu Xiaolei and Su Yu are a loving young couple, and their warmth and romance make many friends envious. Su Yu’s developed computer program becomes the center of attention and competition among various forces, with two people named Li Mu representing two of these factions. The same names add a layer of complexity to the entire situation. To force Su Yu to submit, the elder Li Mu, through Doctor Lin, diagnoses Xu Xiaolei with HIV, leading Su Yu to borrow money everywhere to treat him and eventually being driven to sell the program. However, after Su Yu steals the program, she tragically dies in a staged car accident. Luo Naiming is the girlfriend of the elder Li Mu, whom he met in the United States. Back in China, she helped Xu Xiaolei and deeply fell in love with him. Upon returning home and learning of Xu Xiaolei's marriage to Su Yu, she feels a sense of loss. To help Xu Xiaolei, she sells her car, unaware that the elder Li Mu is the culprit behind this tragedy. The younger Li Mu and Su Yu are childhood sweethearts, but due to their parents’ relationships, they could not marry. As the younger Li Mu puts it, Su Yu owes him her life. He seems more likely to obtain the program worth tens of millions. Xu Xiaolei eventually discovers he does not have HIV. He wants to expose the conspiracy and uncover what lies behind his beloved Su Yu. He tracks Doctor Lin to Dalian and then back to Beijing. When he finds Doctor Lin, he has already been killed. The Public Security Bureau takes the theft of the program very seriously and begins to suspect Su Yu's death. The younger Li Mu, with his sensitivity, is aware of the elder Li Mu's actions and discovers the Public Security Bureau has begun an investigation. One day, he visits Xu Xiaolei and informs him of his relationship with Su Yu, firmly assuring him that her death has nothing to do with him. He then hands a disk to Xu Xiaolei, claiming it was temporarily stored here by Su Yu. Luo Naiming advises Xu Xiaolei to give the disk to the Public Security Bureau, but he refuses, fearing it would make Su Yu a criminal. He opens the disk himself but finds it contains a virus. Luo and Xu regret this decision; while sorting through Su Yu’s belongings, they discover she hid the program disk behind her picture frame. At Luo Naiming's house, the elder Li Mu sees Xu Xiaolei with Luo. The elder Li Mu kidnaps Xu Xiaolei to seize the program, and Luo proposes to exchange the program for Xu Xiaolei's release. The elder Li Mu delivers the program disk to a buyer in Hong Kong, only to find out the disk is fake, resulting in his death at the hands of the Hong Kong buyer. This leads Luo Naiming into despair. At this moment, the younger Li Mu, who has fallen in love with Luo Naiming, comes to her house and tells her that he switched the disks. The Hong Kong buyer suspects that the fake disk was a plot by Xu Xiaolei and Luo Naiming, sending killers after them. The younger Li Mu sees through the Hong Kong buyer's scheme and risks his life to save Luo Naiming, taking her away from Beijing. His actions shock Luo Naiming, and she decides to leave the country with him. On the eve of their departure, Luo Naiming discovers she is pregnant with Xu Xiaolei's child. The younger Li Mu realizes that he and Luo Naiming will not find true happiness together and insists on sending her back to Beijing. He brings Luo back, but they are eventually discovered by the Public Security Bureau. During the standoff, a young detective, Peng Wei, is shot by the younger Li Mu while trying not to harm Luo Naiming. Luo then uses Peng Wei's gun to force the younger Li Mu to hand over the program disk. Peng Wei, however, reveals that the real program disk has long been in the hands of the Public Security Bureau. The younger Li Mu completely breaks down, killing Xu Xiaolei, who has rushed to the scene, and he ends up dying at Luo Naiming's hands...
