During the late Qing and early Republican period, in the Tianjin Wei at the mouth of the nine rivers, there was an antique shop called Hengyazhai. The owner of Hengyazhai, Zhao Rugui (played by Wang Gang), is a legendary figure known for his shrewdness and integrity. His profound knowledge of jade appreciation is well-regarded in the industry and has even caught the attention of the dethroned Emperor Puyi. At a critical time for the survival of the Chinese nation, Japanese invaders advanced relentlessly, conspiring to use Puyi to achieve their ambition of dominating China. Zhao’s eldest son-in-law, Lu Xiongfeng (played by Ding Haifeng), is a leader of the Green Gang who, driven by profit, cooperates with the Japanese to smuggle national treasures of jade; Zhao's second daughter, Huaiyu (played by Shen Aojun), is a passionate patriot who opposes the Japanese invaders. On the other hand, Zhao Rugui acquires the exquisite jade piece "Wang Tian Hou" from the eunuch Liu Baoxun, and to protect it from falling into the hands of the invaders, he faces a painful and significant choice... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Zhou Zhentian.
