A young Japanese girl, Nozomi (played by Zeng Xiaoqing), is forced into prostitution, becoming one of the top karayuki san in Malaya (Japanese women who worked as sex workers in the late 19th century), while secretly acting as a spy for Japan. She befriends a Chinese girl, Qing Ling (played by Fang Rong), who is trying to escape her luxurious lifestyle. The story unfolds in the 1920s, in a patriarchal British colony, where Nozomi is targeted by both British and Japanese intelligence agencies, while Qing Ling is betrayed by her lover and thrown into prostitution.
