A girl named Marie Adler (played by Kaitlyn Dever) reports to the police that she was raped at home by an intruder, but investigators and those around her doubt the truth of her story. Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, detectives Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall (played by Emmy winners Toni Collette and Merritt Wever) encounter each other while investigating two very similar rape cases, and together they pursue the elusive serial rapist. The series "Unbelievable" is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning article "An Unbelievable Story of Rape" published by The Marshall Project and ProPublica (written by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong), as well as the This American Life radio episode "Anatomy of Doubt." The series is produced by CBS Television Studios, with series executives Susannah Grant, Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly, Lisa Cholodenko, Ayelet Waldman, Michael Chabon, Katie Couric, Richard Toffel, Neal Baer, Robin Swicord, and Marie among the producers.
