"The Anti-bandit Record of Western Sichuan" tells the love and hate story of the young man Zhou Zhibin and the actress Danfeng from a traveling theater at the Two Rivers Mouth fortress in Western Sichuan during the dawn of the new China. The impassioned youth Zhou Zhibin and the leading actress Danfeng have a romantic promise made on the Wannian Platform with flying knives. However, Zhou’s father, Zhou Wenxuan, also admires Danfeng's bravery and chivalry. A smoking ban order from the newly appointed county magistrate sent by the Kuomintang plunges Two Rivers Mouth into turmoil over the smuggling of opium. Zhou Zhibin becomes sworn brothers with the town chief’s son Zhang Jibang and the orphan Huang Dengbao to defend Two Rivers Mouth at all costs. To rescue Danfeng, they bravely storm bandit lairs several times, but are captured alive by the notorious bandit King Diamond. In a twist of fate, Huang Dengbao escapes to King Diamond's dock and becomes one of his formidable subordinates. Zhang Jibang gets framed by wicked people and is secretly sent by the enlightened magistrate Ma Yuzhi to a military academy in the provincial capital. Zhou Zhibin, meanwhile, is crippled by King Diamond while trying to save Danfeng. To protect Zhou Zhibin from dying, Danfeng reluctantly agrees to marry Zhou Wenxuan as a concubine to King Diamond. After a grand wedding banquet, the former lovers become a stepmother and her stepson... Zhou Wenxuan is killed due to the collusion of officials and bandits, leading to Zhou Zhibin and Danfeng being slandered and despised by society. Remembering Zhou Wenxuan's dying wish, Danfeng upholds the Zhou family as "the stepmother." Unable to bear the decline of the family, Zhou Zhibin leaves Two Rivers Mouth to join Zhang Jibang in the provincial capital military academy. He blames himself for his father's death and, lured by King Diamond, gets addicted to opium. Out of money to pay for his drug habits, he is beaten up and sent back to Two Rivers Mouth. The opportunist Li Yaowu seizes the chance to tie Zhou Zhibin up on the Wannian Platform, publicly humiliating him as "a dog." Danfeng uses the Zhou family's deed and all her possessions to save Zhou Zhibin's life, while she herself lives in a dilapidated thatched house holding the ancestral tablet of the Zhou family. When Zhou Zhibin finally arrives at the military academy in the provincial capital, he learns the unfortunate news that his ally Jibang and the magistrate's daughter Ma Juhua have been executed as Communists... Jiang Weishu, who turns out to be a beggar, is rescued back to Danfeng's thatched house by Zhou Zhibin. Observing his surroundings, Zhou Zhibin finally awakens to his responsibilities towards the Zhou family and Danfeng. Determined to take revenge for his father's blood debt, Zhou Zhibin begins a violent rampage. Not wanting to see Zhou Zhibin turned into a monster by the world, Danfeng uses maternal love to help him quit opium and encourages him to marry Jiang Weishu, who is carrying Zhang Jibang's child, hoping to restore warmth in his home. Huang Dengbao, burdened by the memory of King Diamond killing his wife, Miss Xu, is haunted by vengeance. During Zhou Zhibin and Jiang Weishu's wedding banquet, he settles old scores and joins forces with Zhou Zhibin to kill King Diamond. Weishu, regretting her alliance, is filled with worries about their future life. Eventually, Zhou Zhibin ascends to the position of town chief of Two Rivers Mouth, and Huang Dengbao logically becomes the biggest bandit leader in smuggling... With the news of the Communist Party's anti-smuggling and smoking ban reaching Two Rivers Mouth, Huang Dengbao leaves to attend the Whampoa Military Academy at the recommendation of the behind-the-scenes tycoon Lin Siye. Zhou Zhibin discovers the mystery of his son Zhou Wei's origin and becomes furious because Danfeng and Weishu kept it a secret. Danfeng understands that Zhou Wei stands as a barrier between Zhou Zhibin and Weishu; she decides to quietly take Zhou Wei away so that Zhou Zhibin and Weishu can live happily together. Under Weishu's insistence, Danfeng ultimately leaves the Zhou family on her own. Zhou Zhibin, touched by "the stepmother's" kindness, accepts Zhou Wei and lives a tranquil life with Weishu. With the help of Commander Gu Yi and Ma Juhua, Zhang Jibang quickly rises to become a company commander in the People's Liberation Army. When the "dead" Jibang becomes a PLAC company commander, and Dengbao becomes a special envoy for the Kuomintang reactionaries, the two lead their respective troops back to Two Rivers Mouth, leaving Zhou Zhibin in a state of confusion. Danfeng, hidden in the mountains for many years, learns of the instability in Two Rivers Mouth and returns to the Zhou residence with her adopted son, Water Buffalo. Foolishly worried that Zhang Jibang's "resurrection" will take away Weishu and Zhou Wei, and fearing the Communist Party's "shared wives" will leave him with nothing again, Zhou Zhibin refuses to cooperate with the Communist Party and adamantly declines to open Two Rivers Mouth for the PLA's entry. Under Lin Siye's guidance, Huang Dengbao stirs discord, exploiting Zhou Zhibin’s fear of Zhang Jibang to distance them. To resolve Zhou Zhibin's mental block, Zhang Jibang marries Ma Juhua, who has harbored feelings for him for many years and developed a revolutionary bond. Upon discovering that the relatives she has been searching for are actually Dengbao's, Danfeng rightly identifies that only the PLA can bring about a brighter future for the people. With the support and help of Danfeng and Jibang, Zhou Zhibin ultimately completes his transformation and aligns himself with justice. As Huang Dengbao, who continues to sink further into darkness, resorts to using the lives of Danfeng and Weishu to blackmail Zhou Zhibin and Zhang Jibang, Danfeng pulls a fuse from her body, demolishing the road the PLA uses to reach Two Rivers Mouth, singing the final lament with her most precious life. After experiencing the ups and downs of life, the swings of human nature, and conflicts of love and hate, Zhou Zhibin ultimately chooses to welcome the victory of the new China together with Zhang Jibang, Jiang Weishu, and Zhou Wei.
