Under the haze of the China-Japan war, the Shanghai International Settlement remains vibrant with music and dance, intoxicated by a world of luxury, becoming the only surviving island. However, behind the unprecedented prosperity lies a lurking crisis and undercurrents. The dance queen, Jasmine, of the Paramount dance hall is found dead in her apartment the day after a wild night. Early in the morning, private detective Wu Fei is disturbed by Inspector Chen Shu of the police department, who informs him of Jasmine's murder. Wu Fei is a somewhat renowned private detective in the settlement and has assisted Chen Shu in solving major and bizarre cases. He rushes to the crime scene, and initial investigations have identified the suspect as Wang Zhongren, a wealthy patron and frequent visitor of the Paramount, who was romantically involved with Jasmine.
