This series is adapted from Taffy Brodesser-Akner's bestselling novel of the same name, with the author herself serving as the screenwriter. The story follows Toby Fleishman, who in his forties has recently separated. He married before graduating from medical school and is now plunged into the new world of dating through apps, experiencing successes he never had in his youth. Just as he begins his first summer of sexual freedom, his ex-wife Rachel suddenly disappears, leaving their children with him and cutting off all communication. Toby balances various aspects of his life—raising kids, reconnecting with old friends, waiting for a long-awaited promotion at the hospital, and meeting many women in Manhattan who might be suitable for him. However, he realizes that to understand what really happened to Rachel, he needs to honestly examine their marriage.
