In the spring of 1946, the Northeast Democratic United Army, led by the Chinese Communist Party, engaged in fierce battles with the Kuomintang troops in Siping, Jilin. Numerous wounded soldiers evacuated from the front lines died in the rear due to a lack of timely medical treatment. Faced with significant troop reductions caused by delayed rescue efforts, Sun Yizhi, then Minister of Health for the Northeast Democratic United Army, received permission from Commander Huang Kecheng to establish a battlefield central hospital in an abandoned church at the frontline command post. The central hospital built in the church was relatively safe, but the lack of medical supplies and surgical doctors became urgent issues in the face of a large number of wounded. After consulting with superiors, Sun Yizhi decided to recruit doctors from the captured Kuomintang personnel. Sun Yizhi's decision faced opposition from Director Tang and Dr. Liu at the hospital, but with Sun Yizhi's persistence and the reality of the situation, a group of captured Kuomintang doctors, including Shijian and Zeng Sanmin, were incorporated into the battlefield central hospital. After initial concerns were alleviated by Sun Yizhi's sincerity, Shijian, Zeng Sanmin, and others took to the operating tables, alleviating the shortage of hospital doctors and saving many wounded. However, problems soon arose. During the rescue of a bloodied battle hero brought down from the front line, improper hemorrhage control led to the hero's death on the operating table. Director Tang and Dr. Liu, who already distrustful of the Kuomintang doctors appointed by Sun Yizhi, became even more skeptical after the battle hero died under Shijian's surgical knife, prompting Shijian to flee overnight. Upon learning of Shijian's escape, Sun Yizhi risked entering enemy territory to pursue him, forgiving his flight and restoring his trust. Sun Yizhi's trust from a doctor's perspective, especially after he chose to give blood to an injured Kuomintang soldier and delayed attending to his wife who was about to give birth—resulting in her death during a difficult labor—deeply moved the captured Kuomintang doctors, including Shijian, inspiring them to diligently work and save the wounded. The fighting continued. The number of wounded increased, and to address their nutritional deficiencies, Sun Yizhi forcibly took a truckload of supplies from the logistics department with his guards. To ensure timely evacuation of the wounded from the front lines, Sun Yizhi organized all hospital staff to charge into the gunfire of the front lines to rescue the injured, among whom was the proactive Shijian. As the weather suddenly turned cold, to combat frostbite among the wounded, Shijian, under Sun Yizhi's influence, brought out a secret remedy he had developed over many years. When the battlefield central hospital received orders to withdraw from Siping, Shijian did not stay behind to wait for the advancing Kuomintang army but chose to follow Sun Yizhi, heading towards the rising sun.
