In 1988, in the former Soviet Union's Kalmykia, a young doctor at a children's hospital, Kirsan Ayushev, suspected that several of his patients had been infected with HIV. His older colleagues did not believe him, so Kirsan secretly sent samples to Moscow. When the test results confirmed he was right, scientist Dmitry Goncharov, a little-known expert in “exotic” diseases in the Soviet Union, joined the case. Thus, the fate of dozens of children and a few adults—perhaps even the fate of the entire country—rested in the hands of an epidemiologist from the capital and a provincial pediatrician.
