Through the love story between cart worker Nie Fuxiang and two women, Yan Hui and Zheng Xiulan, as well as the emotional entanglements between these two women and two men, Su Ran and Hai Wang, it passionately praises the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation, which values deep emotions and honesty. Their personal charisma illustrates the theme that genuine relationships among people must be grounded in true feelings; only true feelings can break the stone. The drama starts in the early 1960s, avoiding the tumultuous years of the Cultural Revolution, and continues until the late 20th century during the reform and opening-up period, expressing the necessity and importance of building a harmonious society through the changes of the times. The basic plot of the drama is as follows: Nie Fuxiang, who cannot read many characters, is an ordinary cart driver in the transport company. Due to his unremarkable appearance, he is past the age of marriage but remains single, with almost every prospective bride rejecting him, leaving him with none. Surprisingly, this cart driver connects with young engineer Su Ran from the Tongzhou Mechanics Research Institute. One snowy day, Nie Fuxiang has an acute appendicitis attack and collapses by the roadside, just as Su Ran is returning home; she takes him to the hospital and saves his life. Not long after, Su Ran is robbed, and coincidentally, Nie Fuxiang arrives just in time to save her. From then on, their relationship develops. Seeing that Nie Fuxiang is single, Su Ran helps him get introduced to Zheng Xiulan. The two hit it off immediately and soon fall deeply in love. Shortly afterward, Su Ran, who is seriously ill, is falsely accused and imprisoned. In fact, if her colleague Liu Jun had explained the situation, it could have been a minor issue, but the narrow-minded Liu Jun refuses to speak out for fear of trouble. Just as Nie Fuxiang is preparing to get married, Zheng Xiulan suddenly goes missing. When he seeks her family, he learns that she has already obtained a marriage certificate with someone else. Devastated, Nie Fuxiang falls into a state of confusion. Meanwhile, in the prison hospital, Su Ran sees Nie Fuxiang distressed over Zheng Xiulan’s departure and gives him a jade pendant, urging him to consider being with Yan Hui if he doesn’t mind. Although Nie Fuxiang is reluctant, he accepts the pendant reluctantly upon seeing Su Ran’s tearful pleading. A disheveled Zheng Xiulan unexpectedly comes to Nie Fuxiang late at night, pouring out her sorrow about parting. It turns out that Zheng Xiulan's brother is forcing her to marry another man. At this moment, Nie Fuxiang is at a loss, worried about the vulnerable Yan Hui and reluctant to give up the beloved Zheng Xiulan. Upon learning about Su Ran’s wishes for the two to be together, Zheng Xiulan, in her distress, decides to hastily marry another man, Sun Haiwang. Yan Hui learns of this and rushes to plead with Zheng Xiulan not to leave, but Zheng Xiulan tearfully refuses. In her daze, Yan Hui does not know which path to take; she does not want to involve Nie Fuxiang, yet reality pressures her to embrace him. As Nie Fuxiang and Yan Hui come together, the cultural and personality differences bring them both heartache and torment. Over time, they finally endure and give birth to a son and a daughter. Years go by; the wronged Su Ran is exonerated and released from prison. He wishes to see Yan Hui and meet his own children, but to avoid disrupting the lives of the decades-long couple, he fulfills his parents’ wish and goes to America, where he hurriedly gets married to another woman. Another twenty years pass, and the mainland of the motherland is thriving. The gray-haired Su Ran is sent back to the mainland by a large American company and unexpectedly learns that he has a son, Su Wei, from the woman he lived with for just a year, who is dating Yan Hui and Nie Fuxiang's granddaughter, Yingxin. Not wanting to disrupt the peaceful life of Yan Hui and Nie Fuxiang, Su Ran reluctantly informs Nie Fuxiang about this through his classmate Liu Zilin. This news explodes like a bomb in front of Nie Fuxiang, leaving him bewildered. Su Wei's nanny in America learns of this and tells Su Ran that Su Wei may not be his biological son. To spare the devastated Su Wei and Yingxin, Su Ran searches high and low and finally finds Su Wei's mother, Li Yanhua. However, for the sake of her reputation and status, Li Yanhua refuses to acknowledge that Su Wei is her child. Ultimately, Su Ran moves Li Yanhua with genuine feelings, and she reveals the truth she had buried for decades. After the storm passes, Nie Fuxiang finally returns to Zheng Xiulan's side, caring for her as she suffers from a terminal illness, wanting to accompany Zheng Xiulan with his deep love for a few more years. At this moment, the gray-haired Yan Hui gazes in disbelief at the returned Su Ran and cannot help but fall into his embrace. But suddenly remembering the jade pendant left behind by Nie Fuxiang, she pushes Su Ran away and runs through the wind and rain, calling out, "Xiangzi, where are you!"
