This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by American author Walter Kirn. Ryan Bingham (played by George Clooney) works for a company in Omaha, Nebraska that specializes in providing layoff services for other companies, spending over 300 days a year traveling across the country, making airports his second home. During a routine layoff trip, Ryan meets the businesswoman Alex (played by Vera Farmiga), and they fall for each other but are both content with maintaining a casual sexual relationship. Meanwhile, Ryan's college intern Natalie (played by Anna Kendrick) wins the favor of the company president and is eager to promote a reform that involves remote layoffs through video conferencing. Ryan opposes the change but must take Natalie around to familiarize her with the business... This film received six Oscar nominations, including Best Director, Best Picture, Best Actor (George Clooney), Best Supporting Actress (Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick), and Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as six Golden Globe nominations, including Best Director and Best Picture, and won the Best Screenplay Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
