A single mother raises her two sons to adulthood. Originally, the three of them were happy together, but one night, an incident occurs when the youngest is left alone at home; not only does the kitchen get burned, but he also suffers severe burns. Social welfare agencies intervene, deeming the mother, who works at a nightclub to support the family, unfit to care for the children. They use various methods to forcibly separate this once-happy family, leading to a hundred percent absurd situation where the struggle against bureaucracy unfolds, pitting family ties against institutional power. How can one balance legal reasoning and emotional ties, the state and the family? If they must ultimately part ways, they must do so with peace of mind, without shame before heaven and earth. The filmmaker, Delphine De Vigan, makes a stunning debut with this narrative feature, which was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival.
