In the late 1980s, in a seaside town in northern China, there is a large family led by the old soldier He Yuan. Apart from the elderly couple He Yuan and Wu Suqin, there are their four daughters and one son. He Yuan's greatest dream is for all of his daughters to marry military sons-in-law, and for his son to marry a virtuous wife, so that the entire family can live together in the He family courtyard. As He Yuan is approaching retirement, he decides to let his second daughter He Fang immediately find a son-in-law to marry, in order to preserve their long-term residence. He Fang has to confess that she already has a close boyfriend. He Yuan discovers that this boyfriend is actually Xu Zhiyuan, the son of his old rival Xu Hao, and believes Xu Hao is plotting to take over his old courtyard, firmly opposing their relationship. He Fang is forced to reveal that she is already pregnant, and after a lot of complications, He Yuan finally agrees to their marriage, but requires Xu Zhiyuan to live in the He family. The Xu family reluctantly agrees. Soon, He Yuan discovers that his third daughter He Ting is getting too close to a small-time guitarist Liu Delin, and he, in a fit of rage, uses violence to force the two young people to break up. He Ting plans to elope with Liu Delin. At a critical moment, her elder sister He Bing and sister-in-law Ma Tianlu pull her back home. Liu Delin vows to make something of himself and come back to marry He Ting. Liu Delin returns after becoming rich, but He Yuan shows no interest in his money and still does not allow him to marry He Ting. Just as elder son-in-law Ma Tianlu is transitioning back to civilian life, Liu Delin feels an opportunity has come. In the end, Liu Delin manages to clear Ma Tianlu's name through various connections and arranges for him to work at his company. He Shan's words create subtle changes in Xu Zhiyuan and He Fang's relationship, turning ambiguous, and Wu Suqin notices the developments between He Shan and Xu Zhiyuan. He Shan chooses to leave town. He Jian gets involved with a village girl Lin Meijuan, who becomes pregnant. Under pressure from their father He Yuan, he has no choice but to marry her. Although He Shan is away, she cannot let go of her feelings for Xu Zhiyuan. He Fang is concerned about this but when she tries to talk to her husband, Xu Zhiyuan keeps avoiding her. He Fang becomes unwell and is found to need a kidney transplant; only He Shan's kidney is a match. To atone for her past mistakes, He Shan decides to donate one of her kidneys to her sister, regardless of the risks. To avoid burdening the family, He Fang quietly commits suicide. Before dying, she entrusts her sister to her husband. He Yuan, however, refuses to agree. Just as He Shan is struggling against this, Xu Zhiyuan unexpectedly refuses to marry He Ting and quickly marries another woman. He Ting opens a restaurant, noticing her brother-in-law Ma Tianlu is a good cook. As Ma Tianlu is not adjusting well to working at Liu Delin’s company, he becomes the head chef at He Ting’s restaurant. The eldest daughter He Bing sees her younger brother making a fortune from stocks and, out of jealousy, begins trading stocks herself. As expected, the market booms, and she makes a handsome profit. The entire He family joins in this stock market frenzy. Little do they know, they fall victim to a scam and lose almost all their family assets. Liu Delin's coal mine also experiences an accident, requiring a large sum of compensation. In the end, this money is used to pay off He Jian’s high-interest debts. Even He Yuan almost loses the He family courtyard. In a fit of rage, He Jian injures someone and is arrested. His wife Lin Meijuan, at this time, declares she will wait for him with their child. He Yuan celebrates his 69th birthday, and Xu Zhiyuan, hoping to please him, brings He Jian out of jail to attend the banquet. His wife Dong Yanyan is very unhappy, leading to a quarrel between them. After He Jian is released from prison, he discovers this situation and believes they are having an affair, leading to Lin Meijuan suffering a miscarriage. He Jian feels deeply guilty and leaves all his assets and a divorce agreement, abandoning the family. Gao Tao, seeing He Bing has left the He family, feels he has achieved his revenge and confronts her. He Bing jumps off a building and commits suicide. Ma Xiao Lu avenges his mother by stabbing Gao Tao. If not for grandfather He Yuan's protection, he would have almost gone to jail. Although Liu Delin's work is going well, he encounters trouble in his personal life. His female boss Jia Aihua has taken a liking to him and hopes to have an ambiguous relationship with him. Liu Delin does his best to reject her advances, but Jia Aihua refuses to give up. The company acquires a piece of land, which happens to be the He family courtyard, leaving Liu Delin feeling helpless. In the end, to extricate himself and protect the He family courtyard, he agrees to Jia Aihua's harsh work demands. Ultimately, he succumbs to exhaustion, gets into a car accident, and dies on the way home. At this moment, He Ting is happily discovering she is pregnant. When He Yuan celebrates his birthday again, some people can no longer come, but new life is born. He Yuan is still around, and the He family courtyard remains.
