During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, there were years of continuous warfare. A spiritual master named Ji Shenguang, seeking enlightenment and wishing to take refuge in Buddhism, came to Shaolin Temple and requested the abbot Bodhidharma to shave his head and ordain him. Ji Shenguang stood in the snow for three days and nights. The abbot Bodhidharma, unwilling to take him in, said, "I will accept you as a disciple only if red snow falls from the sky." Determined to become a monk, Ji Shenguang severed his left arm, and then, miraculously, red snow fell. Touched by his sincerity, Bodhidharma accepted him as a disciple and bestowed upon him the Dharma name Huike. Fifteen years later, Bodhidharma had passed away, and Huike became the second abbot of Shaolin Temple. He had five outstanding disciples: in order, they were Huiyuan, Huishi, Huinu, Huineng, and Huikong. Each practiced martial arts and possessed unique skills. Abbot Huike devoted himself to deep meditation and Zen enlightenment, becoming a scripture teacher for the current empress, often going to the palace to preach. Wang Gaoqi of Luoyang, an old acquaintance of the abbot, came to play chess with him. Abbot Huike mentioned that recently, worldly matters had been tumultuous, making it difficult for his disciples to concentrate on their spiritual practices. Wang Gaoqi said that the court was expanding the imperial harem, urgently summoning girls from various regions to the palace, and they had no choice but to comply with the imperial decree. According to the previous dynasty's regulations, the harem had already become excessively large, but now, with frequent changes in power and ongoing wars, who wouldn't want to enjoy pleasures in a timely manner after gaining the realm?
