The story takes place in the early Republican era, where Wang Ziqian (played by Qin Hailu), Wang Ziyin (played by Liu Tao), and Wang Ziying (played by Tu Liman) are the three daughters of the grand scholar Wang Wenqian. When the Wang family faces disaster, Wang Wenqian entrusts the three girls to the housekeeper and places a part of a jade pendant on each of them as a token for future recognition. Soon after, the Wang family is eradicated, disappearing from the world. Wang Ziqian adopts the name Lin Xuelian, marrying into a wealthy family and inheriting a fortune after her husband's death. Wang Ziyin changes her name to Huang Meier and is adopted by the couple Deng Qingfeng from a Huangmei opera troupe. Wang Ziying is now Qiao Ju, following the eldest lady to the Wu family, where she falls in love with the eldest son, Wu Yusheng (played by Feng Shaofeng). Liu Jianxiong (played by Cheng Sihan) is the son of the former Qing general Liu Zhenbang, who is the culprit responsible for the Wang family's tragic downfall. Liu Jianxiong becomes infatuated with Huang Meier's beauty and attempts to possess her. When rejected, he becomes furious and resorts to framing Wang Ziqian out of revenge.
