In the film, the main character Uncle Niu's father was a traitor during the Japanese occupation. To save his own life, he killed the entire family of a patriotic martyr. After being wronged and dying, the martyr became a vengeful spirit and vowed to kill Uncle Niu's family to avenge his own. Uncle Niu has the ability to see ghosts and befriends a group of spirits. Under the protection of the spirits, the martyr's vengeful spirit could not harm Uncle Niu, so it turned its attention to Uncle Niu's son, Hui. To prevent Hui from being harmed, Uncle Niu sends him abroad for refuge. Since then, Uncle Niu runs a tea house in the New Territories, operating during the day and hosting the spirits at night to thank them for protecting his family. When Hui is twenty-six, he returns to Hong Kong to develop his career, and a property developer plans to acquire the land of Uncle Niu's tea house. Uncle Niu refuses to sell, and Hui decides to steal the land deed and seal to sell the property. When Uncle Niu discovers this, Hui, in a panic, knocks Uncle Niu down with a heavy object. Hui's act of rebellion against his father angers the spirits, and they no longer protect Hui, giving the martyr's vengeful spirit a chance to take revenge on him. Hui dies in a car accident, and his soul returns to the tea house, where he learns the reason behind his father's hospitality towards the spirits. Hui is filled with regret. At this moment, the vengeful spirit also targets Uncle Niu, who strikes a deal with the spirit, willing to sacrifice his own life in exchange for his son's. When Hui wakes up, he realizes that Uncle Niu, not he, is the one who died in the accident. From then on, Hui takes over the tea house and sets up offerings at each table at night to entertain the spirits.
