The story takes place in the 1980s in Yandu (Zigong), where an ordinary and simple mother, Gao Lanying, walks into Yu Mancang's house with her son, Daman. The family consists of Mancang's two daughters and Mancang's mother. The hot-tempered Yu Mancang dies in a car accident, leaving behind a quirky old lady, an ever-dissatisfied Daman, a wayward Erman, a well-behaved Sanman, and the suddenly appeared illegitimate child, "Xiaoman." After Daman gets out of prison, his career slowly reaches its peak, only to be framed and fall into a low point; a teacher-student relationship involving Erman leads to the teacher's death; and Sanman, who has always been good, is expelled from school due to pregnancy just before graduating from university. Gao Lanying faces sudden blows time and again, bravely taking on the heavy burden of the family.
