The film's protagonist is a 78-year-old renowned British writer who, despite suffering from serious illness, is still an alcoholic and speaks without thinking. He is often ensnared by nightmares at night, which lead him to indulge in fantasies while pondering the plot of his final work and reminiscing about his past. Thus, nightmares, his imagination, and memories intertwine to form the framework of his story. The film blends the process of literary creation with fantasy, anger, and other elements, creating an intricate Freudian puzzle. This is René's first film shot in English. The script is somewhat convoluted and wordy, with a heavy literary flavor, and the film is regarded as René's masterpiece, with particularly outstanding performances from Bogarde; however, general audiences may find it monotonous. Clive Langham (Sir John Gielgud) spends a tormenting night in bed suffering from health problems while concocting a story based on his relatives. He is a bitter man and, through flashbacks, reveals how spiteful, conniving, and treacherous his family is. But is this how they really are, or is it just his own vindictive perspective?
