This drama is based on a true story, recounting how Miep Gies (played by Bel Powley) assisted Otto Frank (played by Liev Schreiber) and his family in hiding to escape Nazi persecution during World War II. Miep, in her twenties, received a request from Otto to hide him and his family in her home to evade the Nazi persecution of Jews at that time. Miep, along with her husband Jan and others, boldly took on this heavy responsibility; for the next two years, she cared for eight refugees, including Otto and Anne. Although the hiding plan ultimately failed in 1944, Miep preserved Anne's diary, which was written during their time in hiding, and returned it to Otto, the only survivor, after the war, turning it into one of the most important documentary records thereafter. After World War II, Miep and Jan formed a social organization to assist returning individuals and dedicated themselves to refuting claims of diary forgery. Miep passed away in Amsterdam in 2010 at the age of 100. "More than 20,000 Dutch people assisted in hiding Jews and others during the years they needed it; I just did what I could help with. My husband did too. It was nothing special," Miep once said.
