In 1978, war tore Italy apart: the Italian Communist Party (DCI) formed a landmark alliance with the country's conservative traditional party—the Christian Democracy Party (DC)—which meant that the first government supported by communists in the history of Western countries was about to take the stage of power. Aldo Moro, the chairman of the DC party, was the main supporter of this agreement. On March 16, 1978, on the very day the new government was to hold its inauguration ceremony, Aldo Moro was kidnapped in an ambush. He was held captive for 55 days, which meant 55 days of hope, fear, negotiation, failure, goodwill, and evil acts. After 55 days, his body was found in the trunk of a car, halfway between the DC headquarters in Rome and the PCI headquarters.
