In 1942, World War II had entered a critical phase. In the South Pacific, fierce competition ensued between Japanese and American forces, and the bottom line of humanity was completely destroyed amidst the sounds of cannon fire. The "Charlie Company" of the U.S. Army was assigned a daunting task: they were ordered to land on Guadalcanal and reclaim position 210 occupied by the Japanese army. The Japanese had the advantage of terrain and their defenses were as solid as a fortress. However, military orders are absolute, and even in the face of hell, the soldiers of Charlie Company were determined to advance. These young men threw themselves into this brutal battlefield for the sake of so-called justice... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by American author James Jones published in 1962, and it won the Golden Bear and Honorary Mention at the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival; the Best Cinematography at the 1999 Chicago Film Critics Association Awards; the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2000 Australian Film Critics Association Awards; and the Best Foreign Language Film Director Award at the 2000 Film Quarterly Awards.
