The story takes place during the late Song Dynasty. The girl Ruonan and the boy Jin Ge meet at a noodle stall in a bustling market. At that moment, Ruonan, dressed in men's clothing, has just fiercely beaten a pretty boy who wronged Chunhua of Hongxiu Courtyard. Still fuming, she curses him while anxiously anticipating the arrival of Song Shijun. Jin Ge (played by Wu Jing), on the other hand, is about to accompany his master, a monk who has taken him in after his father's death, to carve a statue of Guanyin, having been hired by the temple.
