The story takes place during the late Song Dynasty. The girl Ruonan and the boy Jin Ge meet at a noodle stall in a bustling market. At that moment, Ruonan, dressed in men's clothing, has just fiercely beaten a pretty boy who wronged Chunhua of Hongxiu Courtyard. Still fuming, she curses him while anxiously anticipating the arrival of Song Shijun. Jin Ge (played by Wu Jing), on the other hand, is about to accompany his master, a monk who has taken him in after his father's death, to carve a statue of Guanyin, having been hired by the temple. After his mother was killed by "evil men," Jin Ge was taken as a disciple by his master, traveling the world and making a living by carving Buddhist statues, living a simple yet happy life. Kind-hearted and naive, Jin Ge is puzzled by Ruonan's harsh words and cannot help but ask his master if everyone in the world is like this, which angers Ruonan. They argue back and forth. From this point on, a pair of youths with unique backgrounds embark on a tumultuous journey through a chaotic era, evolving from mutual disdain and hatred to love and support, ultimately becoming heroes of a troubled world. Among them, the one who mistakenly killed Jin Ge's mother is the one-armed Wu Song, while the caring monk who raised Jin Ge is the flowery monk Lu Zhishen (played by Xu Jinjian). Ruonan, who shares deep feelings with him, is the long-lost daughter of the green-faced beast Yang Zhi. She harbors resentment as her sister marries Yang Zhi, yet foolishly loves Wu Song's disciple, Song Shijun (played by Guo Jianyong), who is charismatic on the outside but selfish at heart, seeking revenge for his father Song Jiang at the cost of betraying friends and his country. Jin Ge accidentally learns that his father is the despicable Xi Menqing. Born into tragedy, with a deep vengeance for his father's murder, and misunderstood due to his background, all these misfortunes entangle Jin Ge's immature heart. During this time, the Jin Kingdom has long desired the territory of the Song Dynasty and is about to launch a large-scale invasion. In this chaotic era, heroes rise, and the national crisis brings together Ruonan, Song Shijun, Fang Baihua, the daughter of Fang La, the self-proclaimed Little Li Kui Li Dabenshu, and heroes from Water Margin like Wu Song, Lu Zhishen, and Yang Zhi, all taking the stage. The rising star Xi Men Jin Ge is drawn into the historical tumult. Suddenly, Xi Men Jin Ge finds himself in deep crisis. In this conflict, his latent dark side is noticed by Yang Zhi, who nearly entices him into the wrong path. Their sworn brotherhood dissolves as misunderstandings arise over his background; the great hero he fully supports, Yue Fei, becomes the target of assassination by all his brothers and friends; and the scheming Song Shijun, who wants him dead, is strangely regarded by the public as the benevolent "Little Timely Rain."
