The story takes place during the Song Dynasty. Minglan (played by Zhao Liying), the daughter of the Yangzhou Tongpan Sheng Hong, is intelligent and charming but unfortunately, her mother is favored as a concubine, causing her to suffer the envy and hatred of her legitimate mother's family. Following her mother’s dying wish, Minglan conceals her brilliance and seeks refuge under the protection of the elderly matriarch Sheng. During this time, she goes from being a stranger to getting to know Gu Tingye (played by Feng Shaofeng), the second son of the Ningyuan Marquisate, who becomes a rare benefactor in her life. Her mother's departure doesn't bring Minglan peace; even with the matriarch's care, the Sheng family is fraught with hidden dangers that threaten her safety. Throughout this process, Minglan endures humiliation and hardship like a phoenix rising from the ashes, overcoming numerous challenges in her life, pursuing justice and her own happiness with her strength… This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Guan Xin Ze Zuan.
