In 1960, Israel announced the capture of former Nazi German official Adolf Eichmann, known as the "executor of death," and his trial took place in Jerusalem in 1961. The prominent Jewish philosopher Hannah Arendt (portrayed by Barbara Sukowa), who had been living in the United States for many years, was invited by The New Yorker to write about the trial. After attending the trial in Jerusalem, Arendt discovered discrepancies between Eichmann's explanations, public opinion, and her own philosophical thoughts. When Arendt elevated Eichmann's actions to a philosophical level, her article unsurprisingly sparked harsh criticisms and attacks from society, with some of her longtime friends even severing ties with her. This once-favored student of Heidegger found herself wanting to retreat amid the storm but realized that everything was not as simple as she had anticipated.
