In 1999, Dan was in 11th grade and transferred to St. Lawrence, an all-boys Catholic school. His father was undergoing treatment for late-stage brain cancer at a nearby hospital; his mother had passed away when he was only seven. Dan developed a close relationship with Brother Anurak, the school's principal and a psychologist. Brother Anurak tried to cure Dan's sleep paralysis. In his dreams, Dan saw a shadow that suffocated him and became worse when he shifted. Brother Anurak searched for meaning in the dreams; he believed Dan had some sort of complex regarding his father. Dan caused a stir on his first day when he chose a seat that belonged to a senior student named Trin, who mysteriously disappeared a year ago by the lake behind the school. No one dared to sit at that desk or throw it away. He got to know his classmates Jiu and his roommate George, as well as Cham, a student from St. Mary’s School attending the annual performance. As their bond grew, the four of them began investigating Trin's disappearance while helping Dan rid himself of the shadow that haunted him.
