The story is adapted from the true story of Italian linguist and novelist Gavino Ledda, who succeeded in self-education. He was originally a shepherd from the Sardinia region and was illiterate until the age of twenty. Later, unable to bear his father's tyranny, he voluntarily enlisted in the military. A comrade in the army taught him how to read and write, fundamentally changing his mental world. After leaving the army, he went to university to study language and returned to his hometown to confront his strict father with his knowledge. Behind the Scenes: This film is the first major work by Italian directors the Taviani brothers to gain international acclaim, winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The directors employ the long-silent Italian Neorealism filmmaking style to tell this story of father-son conflict set in a remote rural area, conveying a simple and touching atmosphere with a sense of primitive beauty. The moment when young Gavino decides to trade two lambs for an accordion after listening to a stranger's performance is thrilling, as he finally takes action to defy his father.
