The story begins in 1937 in Beiping, amidst the raging war, where Tonghua (played by Xie Yue) and Gucheng (played by Wang Xiaoyang) were born. Tonghua is a young lady raised in the depths of a royal mansion, unaware of the world outside, which is undergoing tremendous changes just a wall away. Gucheng, on the other hand, lost his parents at an early age, left to navigate through the harsh realities of life as a complete wild child. Destiny brings Tonghua and Gucheng together; despite their contrasting personalities, they are drawn to each other. Gucheng's parents' revolutionary comrade, Luo Qiu, finds and adopts him, allowing Gucheng to live under the same roof as Luo Qiu's son, Luo Shuanzi (played by Qian Bo). Subsequently, Luo Qiu sends Gucheng to school, where he befriends Wang Xiaoyong (played by Ding Ding). Coincidentally, Wang Xiaoyong's parents are also old acquaintances of Gucheng's parents.
