In the early years of the Republic of China, in the Tao family mansion of an ancient town in Jiangnan. On this day, the members of the Tao family were in a state of panic due to the strange occurrence of foul-smelling green water bubbling up from an old well in the back yard. A letter from Master Tao (Li Liqun), who had been doing business in Shanghai for six years without returning home, arrived, stating that he would celebrate his sixtieth birthday at home. The matriarch (Song Chunli) calculated that the master’s birthday was only two days away. The Tao family began to stir, mostly to cover up the events and disputes of the past six years. However, what they welcomed was only a lifeless body with a blurred face and a slender woman in mourning clothes (Zhao Lin). The woman named Yi Ping claimed to be the fifth concubine and stated that the deceased was indeed Master Tao, which immediately caused a stir within the Tao family. Subsequently, the second concubine Gui Yun (Shi Ke), the third concubine Ya Zhi (He Saifei), the fourth concubine Yu Cui (Gao Beibei), the eldest son Tao Shu Li (Xiu Qing), and the lover of the third concubine, Da Mei Zi (Chen Xiaofei), engaged in a battle of wits with her. Unlike them, she was not after the family fortune, and there seemed to be an unexplainable affection between her and the second young master Tao Shu Yuan (Jia Yiping), who was unwilling to participate in the conflict.
