In the late Northern Song Dynasty, Princess E-Nuo, the youngest daughter of Emperor Huizong, personally selected the young scholar Tan Yi from the Hanlin Academy to be her tutor and fell in love with him. Unexpectedly, Tan Yi attempted to assassinate the treacherous minister Cai Jing and went on the run. Emperor Huizong ordered E-Nuo to marry far away in Western Xia, but E-Nuo arranged for her close maid, Zi Zhu, to take her place. However, the prince of Western Xia fell in love at first sight with "fake E-Nuo." E-Nuo defied the imperial edict and, together with Zi Zhu, set off for Anxi in Minnan to find her beloved Tan Gongzi. Meanwhile, the Western Xia prince wanted to see the face of the one E-Nuo loved and followed "fake E-Nuo" to Minnan.
