Young T.S. Spivet (played by Kyle Catlett) is born on a remote ranch in Montana. He possesses an exceptionally brilliant mind, has a passion for cartography and scientific illustration, and invents a perpetual motion machine at the age of ten. His father (Callum Keith Rennie) is an avid cowboy enthusiast who collects everything about Western cowboys; his mother (Helena Bonham Carter) is a PhD biologist dedicated to insect research; and his sister is the most ordinary person, often frustrated by being raised in a house full of oddballs. T.S. originally had a fraternal twin brother, Layton, who died in an accident last year. One day, T.S. receives a call from the Smithsonian Institution, informing him that he has been awarded the Baird Prize, a world scientific award, and inviting him to give a speech in Washington. Thus, the ten-year-old scientific prodigy T.S. Spivet secretly climbs aboard a freight train and embarks on an extraordinary journey across America.
